The wildebeests gather in the tens of thousands in a small area of Southern Serengeti to give birth. Over 200,000 calves are born, more than enough to replace the attrition of the Great Migration where over 150,000 perish from natural causes, accidents or predators.
The march continues northwards when the young calves are strong enough. Fewer tourists, the animals are massed in the thousands.
Makes for great viewing as there is a lot of wildlife action.
We will be picked up at the airport by the Miguu driver and brought to Ngare Sero Lodge in Arusha. It’s a 40-minute drive. Ngare is definitely one of our favorites – you will see whyJ

Ngare Sero has a very good spa and a massage will be perfect to get over your flight. Budget per meal is about Php 1,500.00 or less.
Ngaresero is a peaceful, sprawling plantation type property, lush with trees and vegetation. There is plenty of bird life in the area and its local residents include a family of Colobus monkeys who jump from tree to tree plus plenty of birds. There is also horseback riding and village walks – and a spa! After settling in and welcome sundowners, we will have a delicious African dinner at the lodge.
After early breakfast we can explore Arusha City and drive to the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, a large museum-like center for shopping and culture that features art, sculpture, African masks, jewelry, and crafts, material, tableware, etc. Also featured are the increasingly rare Tanzanite jewels that can only be found in Tanzania. Lunch will be at the cultural center. There is also the option of visiting the Arusha Natural History Museum or you can just head back to the Lodge to chill.

The Datogas also engage in agriculture and are excellent at working with metals. After the tribal visit we will drive back to Karatu for dinner and overnight at Bougainvillea Lodge.

I we leave at around 8:30am we should be back in our lodge at 1pm for lunch and for a restful afternoon. It will be pretty hot in the tribal areas so dress appropriately.

(3 hours maybe more if we stop to take in the stunning views and to visit Maasai homes)
After an early morning Valentine’s Day breakfast we will drive from Karatu town via the Ngorongoro crater ridge road to Ndutu in the Southern Serengeti. Ndutu is made mostly of sweeping grasslands and occupies the area towards the Northwest border of the Conservation Area and stretches into South Serengeti. And like most of the Serengeti, it too has endless wide plains dotted with lakes, trees, stunning kopjes. Ndutu is where the Birthing of the Wildebeests takes place. You will see tens and thousands of wildebeests and zebras as they converge in this vast, beautiful area of the Serengeti.
During the birthing season, you may be able to watch Wildebeests giving birth, the newborn calves taking their first steps, and the interactions between mother and calf. You may also see a lot of predators such as lions and hyenas stalking the wildebeest, as they try to take advantage of the vulnerable young.
